04.20. 24 - My Humble Additions to the Fun Scale
Expanded from the REI Fun Scale
two entries in one month! and on another day of significance! i'm really winning here. this month has been really good to me, i love you april. anyways, sunday (hi sundy!) sent me this meme about type 3 fun and how it was totally me and i hate to say it but it kind of is, except then i looked more into the fun scale and realized it's missing some stuff so here's my proposed additions.
current fun scale
- type 1 fun: simply having fun, it's fun when you do it, it's fun to remember
- type 2 fun: fun in retrospect, when you did it you might have had a bad time despite the activity being recreational, but it's fun to remember and you might do it again with different conditions
- type 3 fun: not fun at all, not even in retrospect, you did it and it sucks really bad and you wouldn't do it again now. many such things can fall into this category and still be worth doing. imo life is totally type 3 fun.
so here's my additions to the list.
improved fun scale
- type 1a fun: simply having fun, it's fun when you do it, it's fun to remember, its something you might regularly do for fun or most likely revisit
- type 1b fun: simply having fun, but you wouldn't do it again, so far this one for me is stuff like blacking out or knitting, i did it and remember really good things but i just dont really wanna do it again and i'm maybe past that point as a person. playing risk with friends the other night is a type 1b fun with potential to become type 1a fun.
- type 2a fun: fun in retrospect, when you did it you might have had a bad time despite the activity being recreational, but it's fun to remember and you might do it again with different conditions. going to mammoth with my brother was pretty nice despite how awkward it was and my miserable hungry mountain hike! it felt really bad but afterwards i'm glad i got to go.
- type 2b fun: miserable to plan so that it influences the desire to do the activity, but maybe fun enough in retrospect and maybe enjoyable enough to do it again. there's a lot of stuff that could be bumped into a different category if not for the fact that YOU have to plan it and heaven knows coordinating is one of the most miserable things do to with your loved ones in life. so i feel like that this actually counts as a distinct subtype since it's a different experience from how the fun scale describes it. i'm generally here in this space bc work takes up a lot of my life and gas prices are killing me lately.
- type 3 fun: not fun at all, not even in retrospect, you did it and it sucks really bad and you wouldn't do it again now. many such things can fall into this category and still be worth doing. imo life is totally type 3 fun. the description of alpine climbing and motherhood as type 3 funs is really funny hehe
